“I Know” - Fiona Apple
For the record, I think this is hands-down one of the greatest songs of the last decade, though it’s not all that widely known. It’s actually the closing track (and was never an official single) from her second album, When the Pawn…and I’ve been in love with it since the very first time I heard it all those years ago.
This particular version, recorded at Largo a few years back, is an even more stripped down reworking of an already sparse song: just acoustic guitar, an upright bass (courtesy of Jon Brion), and a woman singing the hell out of a song. It feels right to post when I’m feeling down; I find myself returning to it.
